Session Title EN - From Impact to Integrity: Emerging Topics in Environmental Assessment and Management
Title Using WSP's Nature Vista Platform to Better Integrate Nature into Transportation Decision Making
Abstract

Canada’s transportation sector is central to economic growth, connectivity, and resilience, but it also faces increasing expectations to address biodiversity loss, climate risk, and environmental performance. Digital decision-support platforms are designed to integrate elements of environment requirements into infrastructure planning and asset management and are aligned with several of TAC’s focus areas including environment and climate change, infrastructure and asset management, and technology. They provide a data-driven approach to evaluate ecological impacts, track and calculate ecological impacts needed to verify effects assessment and enable adaptive management, and generate defensible reporting to manage compliance with federal and regional environmental mandates.

This presentation demonstrates what digital decision-support platforms are and how they support evidence-based, transparent decision-making, environmental compliance monitoring, and reporting which are a critical component of environmental assessments. By combining geospatial data, ecological metrics, and scenario analysis, digital decision-support platforms help users identify nature-positive design opportunities, reduce project risks, and meet regulatory requirements, stakeholder expectations, and business commitments. As transportation agencies seek to build more resilient and sustainable systems, integrating nature into decision-making is no longer optional. Digital innovation, using digital decision-support platforms, can bridge the gap between infrastructure delivery and biodiversity conservation, supporting TAC’s vision of transportation systems that contribute to a stronger, more sustainable Canada.
