| Title | Delivering Network Value and Safety on Calgary's 144 Avenue NW |
| Abstract | The 144 Avenue NW Extension delivers the first continuous east–west connection north of Stoney Trail, providing a major mobility enhancement for Calgary’s rapidly growing northwest communities. The project demonstrates how a mid scale urban roadway can achieve region shaping impact while navigating substantial design, terrain, and development constraints. The corridor traverses a 30 metre deep valley, requiring extensive cut and fill transitions, slope stabilization, complex grading, and tailored retaining and noise walls to safely accommodate future traffic volumes and multimodal travel. Advanced terrain modeling supported a roadway profile that maintains year round safety and reliable winter drivability while preserving space for future widening to an ultimate six lane configuration. A defining feature of the project is the realignment of West Nose Creek—one of Calgary’s largest urban creek diversions—paired with the design of a single span NU2.8 girder bridge that simplified construction, reduced long term maintenance demands, and achieved $3.6 million in cost savings through value engineering. This structure enhances user visibility, reduces in stream disturbance, and supports long term corridor expansion. Opening to the public in 2024, the project has already improved connectivity, expanded multi use pathways, and strengthened community access to recreation and open spaces. The 144 Avenue NW Extension illustrates how thoughtful engineering and multidisciplinary coordination can elevate a mid sized roadway project into a high impact corridor that improves safety, mobility, and long term city building outcomes. |
