Title Corrosion Mitigation Strategies for Durable Bridge Infrastructure
Abstract

Canada’s transportation network relies heavily on reinforced concrete bridges, many of which are approaching or exceeding their original design life. A primary factor limiting long-term bridge performance is corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement. Driven by chloride ingress from de-icing salts and other environmental exposure. In this presentation we focus on chloride-induced corrosion which compromises structural durability, increases maintenance demands, and often leads to premature rehabilitation or replacement.

Key challenges in today’s bridge maintenance is addressing corrosion in a manner that ensures safety while optimizing lifecycle costs and minimizing service disruptions. Conventional repair methods frequently treat visible deterioration without controlling the underlying corrosion mechanisms, resulting in recurring damage (Halo effect). There is an increasing need for proactive corrosion mitigation strategies that emphasize preservation rather than structural replacement.

This presentation provides insight based on corrosion mitigation approaches for durable bridge infrastructure. By focusing on both targeted and global protection systems. Technologies discussed include embedded galvanic anodes, distributed anode systems, and surface-applied galvanic protection.

The methodology integrates a review of corrosion fundamentals, assessment of influencing environmental and structural parameters, and analysis of a case study involving the St. Vital Bridge in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In this project, chloride-induced corrosion was mitigated through a combination of targeted and global protection measures, enabling preservation of the bridge substructure while extending its service life.

The findings demonstrate that properly designed corrosion mitigation systems can significantly slow corrosion activity, enhance durability, and reduce long-term maintenance costs. Proactive corrosion control is shown to be a critical component of sustainable bridge management and a key contributor to Transportation for a Strong Canada.
