| Title | Innovations at a Roundabout in Thunder Bay |
| Abstract | In summer 2025 the City of Thunder Bay constructed its second partial multi-lane roundabout at the intersection of Cumberland Street North, North, Water Street and Marina Park Drive. The roundabout has regular pedestrian crossings at the single-lane entries and exits, and crossings supplemented with RRFBs at the two-lane entries and exits. The RRFBs feature an Audible Information Device (AID) with a spoken message to aid users with vision loss. The roundabout also incorporates rumble strips dividing lanes within the two-lane sections. Their purpose is to lessen vehicle speeds by reducing off-peak lane changing so that drivers cannot achieve a faster path (especially on the roundabout exits). This should also reduce incorrect lane utilization and improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists. |
