Abstract Manager

Between 2017 and 2025, Momentum has worked alongside Brookfield Properties in London, UK to deliver the redevelopment of 1 Leadenhall, sat at the corner of a key intersection in the City of London. A pedestrian model was developed for the planning application phase to assess the future demand of neighbouring developments and it was quickly determined that the intersection would fail from a pedestrian comfort point of view. Innovative strategies such as longer pedestrian phases, wider crossings and a diagonal crossing geometry were tested with pedestrian modelling assessment to manage the flow of pedestrians anticipated. In addition, pedestrian demand scenarios were assessed for the construction phases, to validate that an acceptable pedestrian comfort level would be maintained at all times during construction. In collaboration with the local authority, Transport for London, it was determined that a closure of one lane of traffic would be required to maintain the sufficient width and it was decided that this would be an opportunity to definitively close the street, take the extra space for additional public realm, and solve the pedestrian demand pressure at the intersection.
