Title Pedestrian-Centered Lighting Design for Mixed-Use and Pedestrian-Only Corridors
Abstract

As cities increasingly invest in walkable public spaces, lighting becomes a critical tool for supporting nighttime activity, improving safety, accessibility across diverse user groups, and reinforcing the identity of the public realm. Pedestrian‑centered lighting design reframes traditional roadway illumination by prioritizing the visual needs, comfort, and safety of non-motorized users.

By drawing on multiple case studies in a variety of environments, including mixed-use and pedestrian-only applications, this presentation will explore different location and community needs and the results of pedestrian-centered lighting design.

This presentation will outline a design framework that delivers human‑focused illumination while meeting performance, safety, and urban design objectives, ensuring the final lighting solution enhances both function and experience. The current design approach that is established in industry’s best practices evaluates pedestrian and vehicle volumes as core drivers of illumination strategy and this presentation will discuss how this impacts pedestrian only areas. High pedestrian activity requires lighting systems optimized for vertical illuminance, facial recognition, and low‑glare visibility that enhances comfort and wayfinding. In contrast, corridors that continue to support vehicular traffic must balance pedestrian‑focused lighting with driver adaptation levels, glare control, and conflict‑zone visibility. The projects we’ll discuss vary widely in their operational context from fully pedestrianized plazas, festival streets, and car‑free corridors to streets that still accommodate local traffic, transit, or emergency access. Each context has different needs to be addressed. For pedestrian‑only environments, lower mounting heights, tighter spacing, and distribution patterns tailored to human‑scale experience are warranted. Mixed‑mode corridors, however, require integrated, layered lighting systems that support both user groups, creating a safe and visually cohesive streetscape without prioritizing vehicles.

Ultimately, this presentation demonstrates why integrating pedestrianfocused illumination at the conceptual design phase is essential. Early consideration of lighting supports comfort, safety, and a welcoming nighttime environment, ensuring that public spaces bring people together.
