As part of the implementation of the VivaCité Corridor on Côte de la Pente-Douce in Québec City, the City seized the opportunity to close eastbound car traffic on a portion of the street. This change helps reduce through traffic in a residential area and contributes to making walking and cycling safer for everyone. Turning the street into a one‑way corridor also opened the door to creating a greener, more resilient space. Located at the bottom of a hill and experiencing rain runoff and accumulation issues – especially during increasingly frequent heavy-rain events – the redesign of the street focused on nature‑based solutions. A westbound lane with permeable paving was maintained for vehicles, while the remaining space was transformed to support active mobility and urban greening. The project now features one‑way bike lanes, permeable‑paved sidewalks, an electrified bike‑share station, an expanded green space connected to a nearby park, and a new vegetated retention basin. Nearly 12 trees and 641 plants were added, and about 975 square meters of paved surface were removed to make room for nature.
