Session Title DA - Digital Twinning for Transportation Assets
Title Enhancing Traffic Signal Operations by Digital Twin Technologies with ATSPM Data
Abstract

As we know, the traditional traffic signal optimization processing involves modelling, field data collection, new plan generation, filed deployment and evaluation stages and normally takes longer time to make the whole processing cycle happen.  Currently, the ATSPM (Automated Traffic Signal Performance Matrices) system, driven by the traffic signal logs generated during the signal operations, is a great tool in helping identify signal operation issues easy and quick, which would significantly reduce the signal timing plan evaluation time with the new plan deployment. Unfortunately, there is still a surfacing gap and time consuming in new signal timing plan generation and verification processing.

With more and more agencies begin to evaluate the traffic signal systems’ performance using the novel ATSPM MOEs. The proposed ATSPM-in-the-Loop simulation system is able to fill this gap by linking the modelling verification processing with simulation and then using the ATSPM systems to evaluate the proposed traffic signal timing plans.

With this approach, we are capable of building digital-twin technologies into the traffic signal operations. The benefits of such system include providing full-spectrum decision support for traffic signal management from design to operation; and facilitating agencies to develop new insights on identifying traffic signal problems using the ATSPM generated data.
