| Title | The Granville Bridge Connector: A Multidisciplinary Effort Resulting in Multimodal Accessibility |
| Abstract | The Granville Bridge Connector Project was a transformative initiative that reimagined one of Vancouver’s most prominent transportation corridors into a safer, more accessible, and multimodal link. Central to the project is the reallocation of bridge space to prioritize walking, cycling, and accessibility while maintaining essential vehicular movements. The design also included the demolition of select on- and off-ramps, enabling the creation of a new, efficient traffic signal network at ground level. This not only improves safety and circulation but also reclaims valuable land for urban use, supporting broader city-building and sustainability objectives. This presentation will exhibit the multidisciplinary collaboration required to deliver a project of this complexity. The audience will hear from the Dtructural, Civil, and Electrical teams, to understand the key decisions to facilitate a successful project delivery. From a structural perspective, the project addresses complex load redistribution, barrier systems, and ramp removal. The civil scope covers reconfiguring bridge approaches, integrating active transportation infrastructure, and ensuring seamless multimodal connections. From an electrical perspective, the work includes new and revised traffic signals, half signals mounted to aging infrastructure, upgraded pedestrian crosswalks, and enhanced lighting on and around the bridge. Together, these multidisciplinary efforts illustrate how coordinated engineering solutions can reshape urban infrastructure, enhance safety, and support sustainable city growth. This presentation will highlight the collaborative design process, gaining insights into the technical and interdisciplinary challenges of reconfiguring legacy infrastructure for modern needs. Key lessons include strategies for balancing multimodal demands on constrained corridors, and coordinating across structural, civil, and electrical disciplines. Together, these multidisciplinary efforts illustrate how coordinated engineering solutions can reshape urban infrastructure, enhance safety, and support sustainable city growth. |
