Abstract Manager

Over a long career in transportation engineering, failure rarely appears as a single defining moment. More often, it emerges through accumulated challenges—staffing crises, distressed projects, shifting client expectations, and construction issues that test both technical judgment and personal resilience. This lightning presentation reflects on several of the most difficult professional experiences encountered over more than 20 years in the industry, and the lessons learned by navigating through them.

The presentation begins with a leadership challenge faced during the "Great Resignation," when the majority of a small technical team resigned within a matter of days, leaving an active workload with limited resources and no immediate path forward. It explores the practical and emotional realities of rebuilding a team while continuing to deliver commitments to clients.

The discussion then turns to distressed projects, where limited support, quality concerns, and client scrutiny required rapid decision-making under pressure. In several cases, solutions had to be developed, defended, and revised in real time—sometimes imperfectly—while maintaining trust and project momentum. These experiences, while difficult, accelerated professional growth and reinforced the value of accountability, transparency, and adaptability.

Additional reflections include managing projects impacted by repeated client-side staff turnover, where shifting priorities led to rework, renegotiation, and extended delivery timelines. One assignment spanned nearly seven years and five internal project managers, underscoring the importance of documentation, patience, and consistent communication. Finally, the presentation addresses construction-stage challenges, when well-intended designs are returned as unconstructable, requiring fast, pragmatic solutions without losing sight of safety, cost, and schedule.
