As airports continue to expand and modernize, managing landside transportation has become increasingly complex, necessitating dynamic solutions that balance efficiency with passenger and employee satisfaction. There is an emerging focus on developing actionable, real-world solutions that optimize landside operations, especially amidst evolving service landscapes and physical constraints, such as the rise of Transportation Network Company (TNC) operations (e.g., Uber and Lyft) and the pressures posed by ongoing construction.

 This presentation will highlight examples of tackling these challenges across some of North America’s largest and most congested airports. It will explore how we have leveraged our knowledge to create customized strategies that improve ground transportation flow, streamline parking logistics, and address broader landside requirements. By designing adaptable frameworks that respond to shifting needs—whether in response to policy changes, increased passenger volume, or infrastructure limitations—we have established best practices that meet airports’ operational demands while enhancing customer and employee experience.

 Through recent case studies, we will showcase the specific methodologies we applied, including predictive modeling, demand-responsive services, and stakeholder engagement processes. For example, we have implemented solutions that reduce congestion and wait times, improve navigation and accessibility, and provide real-time monitoring to adjust for surges or delays. Our work emphasizes the integration of advanced mobility solutions within the challenging airport landscape, proving essential for airports to achieve both short- and long-term goals in a competitive and rapidly changing environment.

Attendees will gain insight into the practical application of landside transportation operations at airports, from facilitating ground transportation to optimizing parking systems, and learn how these approaches can be adapted to meet the unique needs of other airport facilities. This session promises to provide professionals, planners, and policymakers with a greater understanding of the tools used to study and enhance landside transportation infrastructure at airports, ensuring it remains efficient, resilient, and passenger-centered.
