This emerging academic and industry‑driven initiative aimed at strengthening railway engineering expertise in Canada and promoting sustainable rail transportation. The background highlights a growing local need for qualified professionals in rail, driven by expanding rail project across Canada. Recent partnerships—most notably between Alstom, AtkinsRéalis, and Polytechnique Montréal—demonstrate a strong commitment to developing specialized training programs, including a four‑course railway engineering curriculum launched in 2025. These developments occur in a broader context where transportation remains a significant contributor to national greenhouse gas emissions, reinforcing the importance of advancing sustainable mobility solutions.

The core initiative is the creation of Canada’s first student X‑scale locomotive competition, inspired by the English Railway Challenge. This includes the development of student clubs dedicated to locomotive design and the promotion of railway engineering through industry collaboration. Technical foundations for the competition are already underway, involving preliminary bogie designs, track concepts based on AREMA and TCRP‑155 standards, and exploration of viable test sites such as Exporail’s 12.5‑hectare property.

Beyond the technical dimension, the projetc offers substantial opportunities for talent attraction, inter‑organizational collaboration, and international visibility of Canadian railway expertise. Early momentum is strong, with nine letters of support already received from universities, public organizations, and industry partners. A long‑term roadmap extending to 2028 outlines sequential milestones, including stakeholder engagement, club formation, rule development, and the inaugural competition planned for 2028.
