Session Title GD - All Highways Great and Small: Interchanges, Major Facilities, and Two-Lane Highways
Title Deerfoot Trail - Douglasdale to Calf Robe
Abstract

Deerfoot Trail forms a vital north/south connection through Calgary  carrying up to 160,000 vehicles a day, thus making it the busiest road in Alberta. Starting detailed design in 2020, and construction in 2023 Stantec has worked with AECON on a Design Build (DB)  project to widen Deerfoot Trail from the Douglasdale Interchange to the Calf Robe bridge, a distance of 8.5km. The project included the redesign of three interchanges within those limits including major modifications at the Anderson Road/ Bow Bottom Trail interchange with twinning a bridge over the Bow River, the full redesign of the interchange with a steel bridge structure flyover, and a northbound basketweave. The Southland Drive interchange modifications include the replacement of a signalized intersection with a roundabout, cutback walls at the existing bridge headslopes, and a southbound basketweave.  The Glenmore Trail modifications include twinning the existing bridge, and accompanying ramp reconfigurations.

Interchange layouts, bridges, pre-grading, and retaining structures are designed to accommodate future expansion of the corridor, including a future flyover at Glenmore Trail.  The project includes the construction of seven (7) new bridges and rehab of three (3) additional bridges, with the footprint of two new bridges falling within the limits of two existing bridges to be removed.  Extensive detour planning and implementation has enabled the construction of three bridges to date, with the remaining four bridges all in active construction, all while maintaining traffic flow through the project site.

This presentation will outline the major changes to the corridor, accommodations for future corridor expansion, overview of major construction stages, and update on current construction progress.
