| Title | Pembina Highway Overpass Rehabilitation at Abinojii Mikanah - Realigning Eastbound to Northbound/Southbound Ramp |
| Abstract | The Pembina Highway Overpass at Abinojii Mikanah is a critical north–south transportation link in Winnipeg that serves daily commuters, regional traffic, transit operations, pedestrians, and cyclists. In response to aging infrastructure, evolving mobility needs, and increasing traffic volumes in surrounding neighborhoods—including significant growth in the Waverley West area—the City of Winnipeg is undertaking a comprehensive two‑year rehabilitation and interchange improvement program spanning 2025–2026. The project includes major structural and pavement rehabilitation of the overpass, realignment of the eastbound Abinojii Mikanah off‑ramp to University Crescent, widening and enhancement of active transportation facilities, transit network upgrades, and safety‑focused intersection improvements. As part of the ongoing improvements to the Pembina Highway Overpass at Abinojii Mikanah, the City of Winnipeg, along with Stantec, undertook a significant realignment of the eastbound Abinojii Mikanah ramp to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and improve multimodal connectivity. The existing configuration routes traffic toward Chancellor Drive, contributing to operational challenges at an already complex intersection with high volumes and conflicting turning movements. Engineers identified the need for a substantial redesign to address these safety concerns and accommodate growth in adjacent neighborhoods. This presentation will examine the technical rationale behind the ramp realignment, design considerations, anticipated operational benefits, and the role of traffic studies and community feedback in shaping the final configuration. The project demonstrates how targeted geometric modifications within existing interchange footprints can produce meaningful safety and mobility improvements in urban transportation networks. |
