| Title | West Van Story: When the public doesn't like your project |
| Abstract | In 2020, TransLink launched five RapidBus lines, an arterial BRT network that provided 20% travel time savings, increased frequency, and better passenger amenity. The RapidBus network spanned 10 different municipaities, and represented a sizable upgrade to Metro Vancouver's bus network. The successful launch had one notable absence: a 3 kilometre portion in West Vancouver that was removed from the project less than a year before launch. This segment was deleted due to public pushack that included a street-blocking parade/protest and an open house so highly attended that the fire chief was called in to ensure occupant safety. We will look at what where the issues began, how it spread, and what we learned. The goal of this talk is to provide useful insights to any transportation professional working to advance potentially controversial projects - we went through this mess so you don't have to! |
