Session Title SM - Sustainable Planning and Design Approaches in Small Municipalities
Title Timmins Transportation Master Plan - Shaping Timmins' Mobility for a Dynamic Future
Abstract

The City of Timmins, Ontario, has faced increasing transportation challenges, particularly congestion in its downtown core and along major corridors like Algonquin Boulevard and Riverside Drive. To address these issues, a comprehensive Transportation Master Plan (TMP) was developed with the goal of improving traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and multimodal connectivity. The TMP included extensive data collection efforts, such as traffic counts, AADT volumes, crash history analysis, and zoning reviews, which were crucial for understanding existing transportation conditions and identifying areas for improvement.

Key challenges identified in the TMP included significant congestion on major routes, inadequate trucking routes, gaps in active transportation infrastructure, and aging roadways and transit systems. The plan's recommendations focused on optimizing traffic flow through improved signal timing, the construction of roundabouts at key intersections, and widening major roads where necessary. Public transit was also a focal point, with recommendations for expanded service frequency, better integration with cycling and walking paths, and improved connections between transit and key destinations.

A major component of the plan involved redesigning trucking routes to reduce their impact on downtown traffic and improve safety, including the development of bypass routes for heavy vehicles. Pedestrian and cycling infrastructure improvements were also prioritized, with an emphasis on expanding and connecting pathways to ensure safety and accessibility to important city hubs such as schools, business districts, and parks. In addition, intersection improvements and pedestrian-friendly zones were recommended to enhance safety and mobility.

The TMP also stressed the importance of aligning transportation planning with land use development to support the city’s long-term growth. By implementing the plan's recommendations, Timmins will be better equipped to accommodate future growth, reduce congestion, improve safety, and promote sustainable transportation options.

Our team worked closely with the City of Timmins to develop this strategic plan, combining technical expertise and detailed analysis to craft a comprehensive vision for the city’s transportation future. We are proud of the work accomplished and the lasting impact the TMP will have on improving mobility and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

We are excited to share our insights and experience with transportation professionals in Canada and look forward to contributing to the continued advancement of transportation planning across municipalities.
