Title | Environmental Management Systems (EMS) as a Framework for Advancing Sustainability in Public Transit |
Abstract | Public transit agencies play a pivotal role in advancing sustainability and reducing environmental impacts. Implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS) provides a structured framework for managing environmental responsibilities, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving continuous improvement. This presentation, featuring speakers from Coast Mountain Bus Company (CMBC) and New York City Transit, will explore how EMS frameworks, such as ISO 14001, are applied in large-scale transit operations. Key topics will include integrating EMS into decision-making, tracking environmental KPIs, and aligning with corporate strategic plans at the highest levels. Through case studies, CMBC and New York City Transit will share lessons learned in implementing EMS, overcoming operational challenges, and leveraging EMS to support environmental governance, data-driven decision-making, energy efficiency and waste management initiatives. Attendees will gain practical insights into using EMS as a foundation for sustainability while enhancing operational efficiency and resilience in transit systems. |
