Title Real-Time Parking Maps: Enhancing Transportation Efficiency Through Digital Integration
Abstract

CurbIQ and HotSpot, two digital transportation solutions from Arcadis, have integrated their technologies to deliver real-time parking maps for cities across Canada, including Edmonton, Alberta, and Québec City, Québec. This collaboration improves urban mobility by leveraging digital curb management and parking transaction data to enhance wayfinding and reduce congestion—without the need for costly physical infrastructure.

Edmonton’s implementation of this technology highlights its transformative impact on transportation planning and data-driven decision-making. With over 4,000 paid parking spaces managed via HotSpot’s infrastructure-light payment system, the City of Edmonton can dynamically visualize parking demand through CurbIQ’s interactive digital maps. The system uses live transaction data to estimate on- and off-street parking occupancy in real time, offering drivers clear, up-to-date insights on space availability, pricing, and restrictions. Since its launch in June 2024, the initiative has improved parking efficiency, reduced vehicle circling, and lowered emissions—demonstrating significant economic, environmental, and operational benefits.

The success of this approach extends beyond Edmonton. More than 12 cities and universities across Canada now use CurbIQ and HotSpot’s integrated solution, illustrating its scalability and adaptability for various jurisdictions. By digitizing parking data and making it publicly accessible, cities can enhance transportation planning, optimize curb space, and improve the overall urban experience.

This presentation will explore the role of real-time data in modern transportation systems, showcasing how digital curb management and analytics-driven decision-making can enhance mobility, sustainability, and urban planning across North America.
