Title | Cote First Nation - Improving Community Safety through Safe Transportation Planning |
Abstract | Cote First Nation is an Indigenous community located in Saskatchewan, Canada. The community is part of Treaty 4 territory, which was signed in 1874 between the Crown and various First Nations. This treaty area spans much of southern Saskatchewan, and the Cote First Nation’s traditional territory includes part of this region. The population of Cote First Nation is growing, which brings both opportunities and challenges in terms of community planning, infrastructure development and transportation safety. Cote has completed many major infrastructure projects including the Chief Gabriel Cote Education Complex, Cote Recreation Complex/Hockey Arena , a recreation playground and a water park. Cote First Nation is a growing community that faces challenges and opportunities around transportation and community planning. Effective planning and development in these areas are crucial for fostering sustainable growth, safe transportation systems and improving the quality of life for the members of the community. Some of the work that Cote FN has completed includes a traffic impact assessment and a road assessment with the intention of developing and designing roads and infrastructure to ensuring safe and reliable access to all areas of the Nation. Cote recently initiated a public transit service that will run between the communities of Cote and Kamsack in addition to existing medical and school transportation services. Cote is constructing a walking path through the community that will improve safe mobility throughout the community based on the safe system approach and vision zero principles. This presentation will outline how Cote FN with support from AECOM used a safe systems approach and vision zero principles to drive community planning, infrastructure development and transportation safety improvements. |
