Title | Unconventional: A Case Study in Retrofitting Uncommon Intersection Types for Vulnerable Users |
Abstract | Unconventional intersection designs often arise from the need to create predictable and intuitive solutions that accommodate all road users. Through Edmonton’s Building Great Neighbourhoods program, Al-Terra has implemented innovative intersection designs that enhance safety, accessibility, and functionality in Pleasantview. This presentation will showcase two examples that highlight the importance of transforming ordinary intersections into unique and effective solutions. At 109 Street and 60 Avenue, the intersection presented challenges due to its wide footprint, diagonal road alignment, and offset streets. Al-Terra's solution involved introducing a roundabout that functions as both a traffic management tool and an entrance feature for the neighbourhood. The design provides clarity for vehicles, cyclists, and transit users, signaling a shift from the arterial road to a local street environment. The roundabout improves sightlines, creates additional green space, and maintains transit access, blending functionality with neighbourhood character. Along the 106 Street corridor, a collector roadway with one of Edmonton’s busiest school drop-off zones, the challenge was to safely accommodate high volumes of children and their families while supporting the south side bike network and transit route. Al-Terra implemented protected bike lanes adjacent to sidewalks, creating safe and accessible pick-up and drop-off zones. Continuous crossings at local intersections were introduced to prioritize pedestrian and cyclist movements, ensuring a seamless and safe experience for users of all ages, especially younger children. These crossings significantly enhance comfort and safety, particularly in a school zone environment. By incorporating continuous crossings, Al-Terra aims to transform this design from being seen as unconventional to becoming a standard practice in creating safer streets. These projects underscore the value of unconventional design solutions that addressing complex urban challenges by ensuring safer, more intuitive intersections supporting all modes of transportation. Al-Terra’s approach demonstrates how rethinking the ordinary can transform neighbourhoods into more accessible, user-friendly spaces. |
Presentation Description (for App) | Al-Terra's innovative intersection designs address complex urban challenges. Solutions include a roundabout at 109 Street and 60 Avenue and protected bike lanes along 106 Street with continuous crossings, enhancing safety, accessibility, and multimodal functionality. These designs showcase how rethinking conventional intersections can create intuitive, user-friendly spaces for all road users. |
