Title | Utilising Artificial Intelligence to Address the Fatal Five |
Abstract | Acusensus is dedicated to enhancing public safety and saving lives on the roads. We pioneer road safety technology ecosystems to address critical challenges like detecting mobile phone use and seatbelt compliance through automated and real-time enforcement. Our flagship solution, Heads-Up, revolutionised enforcement technology in 2018. Before its introduction, speed cameras were the sole technology-based enforcement system, addressing only one of the Fatal Five causes of road trauma: speeding. Heads-Up expanded enforcement to tackle three of the Fatal Five - distracted driving, seatbelt non-compliance, and speeding - marking a significant leap in road safety. Today, Heads-Up is utilised globally to support governments in achieving Vision Zero - a commitment to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries by 2050. The impact of AI-based enforcement is evident. In 2019, New South Wales introduced the world's first mobile phone detection camera program, followed by Queensland's world-first enforcement of mobile phone use and seatbelt compliance on a single Acusensus platform. In 2023, Queensland reported a 7.1% reduction in road fatalities, with road deaths declining from 299 to 276. Additionally, seatbelt-related fatalities fell from 43 in 2020 to 32 in 2023. Inspired by these outcomes, New South Wales expanded its program to include seatbelt detection in 2024, and this year, Western Australia has become the first jurisdiction to enforce speed, distracted driving and seatbelt non-compliance on a unified platform. Internationally, Acusensus launched Canada's first large scale mobile phone data collection program in partnership with the University of Alberta, the City of Edmonton, and Edmonton Police. Over 21 days in 2022, Heads-Up monitored 214,121 vehicles, identifying 4,192 (2.3%) as distracted by mobile phones. Such data highlights the prevalence of dangerous behaviours and demonstrates the need for authorities to address them in the future. Continuing to innovate, Acusensus has begun trialling a solution to detect drug and alcohol-impaired driving, targeting all Fatal Five contributors to road trauma. In December 2024, we partnered with Devon and Cornwall Police in the United Kingdom for the world's first trial of an AI-based system identifying impaired driving behaviours. By directly addressing the Fatal Five, Acusensus reaffirms its mission to change driver behaviours and save lives. We remain committed to making roads safer for everyone through cutting-edge innovation. |
