Title | City of Edmonton Safe and Accessible Traffic Accommodation Strategies |
Abstract |
The City of Edmonton has taken a holistic approach in supporting safe and accessible traffic accommodation strategies related to construction and maintenance activities and special events through engineering, education and collaboration with stakeholders.
The City’s Manual of Temporary Traffic Control provides additional guidance on planning and implementing temporary traffic control when work sites or special events interfere with travel on sidewalks, bike infrastructure or roadways. The manual clearly indicates our modal priorities as walking, cycling and public transit, followed by goods movement and vehicles. Related to active modes, the City has worked to develop wayfinding strategies through worksites and special events. Through the manual, we are able to work with contractors to ensure they are communicating with businesses and residents to outline the impacts the work will have on them from potential travel street use and travel pattern changes.
The City has developed a Construction Coordination Committee that regularly meets with representatives from City departments, contractors, utility companies, roadbuilders and residential construction industry representatives, to address the coordination of projects and discuss best practices related to safe and accessible worksites. In addition, City staff work with contractor representatives and complete regular inspections to ensure traffic setups are being appropriately maintained.
In enhancing the liveability and vibrancy of the city, the City of Edmonton safely accommodates hundreds of festivals and events through temporary traffic control coordination and planning, and the development of traffic accommodation plans based on the Manual of Temporary Traffic Control. These activities range from a simple block party to parades, marathons, triathlons and international events throughout the City. In addition, event management plans are developed throughout the year in support of regular season NHL games and playoffs.
