Session Title CO - Cost-Effective Construction Solutions for an Aging and Underfunded Network
Title A Strategic Approach to LRT Station Reconstruction
Abstract

The 17 Avenue SE Extension & Victoria Park/Stampede Station Rebuild project is a critical connector in Calgary’s Culture + Entertainment District. Led by development manager Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) on behalf of project partners the Calgary Stampede and Calgary Transit, the undertaking included the demolition and reconstruction of the station and delivery of a new roadway adjacent to the station, opening a multi-modal gateway across Macleod Trail for the first time in 40 years. Using a phased construction methodology and temporary “shoofly” station, critical work requiring closures to the LRT system was executed over a series of long weekends and one nine-day closure. By embracing advanced planning, phased construction methodologies, and effective communication, CMLC and its partners were able to deliver a complex project within a constrained right-of-way while minimizing impacts to daily LRT service and keeping the station operational throughout most of the construction period.
