Session Title MO - Sustainable Road Maintenance
Title The Transformation of Maintenance & Operations Culture
Abstract

The City of Edmonton Traffic Field Operations area is critical in maintaining a safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation network. This area ensures the longevity and effectiveness of pavement markings and signage, two essential components of traffic safety and traffic management. Sustainable road maintenance has become a growing focus within the City’s operations, driven by the need to optimize resource allocation and enhance the lifecycle performance of traffic-related assets.

The Traffic Field Operations team implements innovative processes and materials to extend the durability and visibility of pavement markings, particularly in challenging weather conditions. High-performance, environmentally friendly paints and thermoplastics are increasingly used to ensure clarity and reflectivity. Seasonal planning and strategic application scheduling help reduce and minimize the frequency of maintenance cycles, improving overall efficiency.

Through proactive inspections and manufacturing processes, the Traffic Field Operations team efficiently maintains the City’s sign inventory. On an ongoing basis, signs are proactively inspected based on a strategic plan that considers inspection cycles and areas where sign damage may be at a higher risk. The team also responds to public inquiries related to damaged or weathered signs. The City’s Sign Shop manufactures signs using environmentally friendly processes, selecting materials that are long-lasting, efficient, and low-maintenance.

Sustainability in Traffic Field Operations extends beyond materials to include workforce practices and equipment usage. The team incorporates innovative materials and equipment to enhance precision and reduce material waste. Continuous staff training in sustainable practices and cross-departmental collaboration ensures alignment with the City’s environmental goals.

Overall, Edmonton’s approach to sustainable road maintenance within traffic field operations demonstrates a strong commitment to innovation, safety, and environmental stewardship. By integrating sustainable materials, leveraging data and technology, and promoting efficient resource use, the City is advancing a maintenance framework that supports long-term infrastructure resilience and public safety. This model serves as a benchmark for municipalities seeking to strike a balance between operational effectiveness and other priorities.
