Session Title EN - Integrating Environmental Gains into Project Design
Title Integrating Low Impact Design and Advanced Modeling to Address Stormwater Management in Expanding Road Networks
Abstract

As Canada’s road networks expand to accommodate urban growth and development, managing the environmental impacts of stormwater has become a critical concern, particularly with the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events due to climate change. This study explores how integrating Low Impact Design (LID) principles and advanced modeling techniques can help create sustainable drainage systems capable of addressing these challenges. The session will focus on a case study from the Region of Peel, Ontario, where efforts are underway to retrofit existing stormwater management infrastructure in anticipation of future climate conditions.

By incorporating LID features such as ponds, underground storage tanks, and green infrastructure, the design process aims to manage both the quantity and quality of stormwater runoff, mitigate flood risks, and enhance water quality. These strategies are crucial as roadways continue to expand and impervious surfaces increase, leading to greater runoff. In addition to discussing the technical design aspects, this study will highlight the financial and logistical challenges associated with upgrading aging systems to meet modern climate demands.

Advanced hydrologic and hydraulic modeling will also be discussed as a critical tool in predicting and managing stormwater under future climate scenarios. The use of these models ensures that infrastructure is resilient to both current and anticipated weather patterns, ensuring that stormwater systems are adaptable and sustainable.

Through this case study and discussion of lessons learned, the session will provide insight into the challenges and opportunities in combining LID techniques with conventional drainage systems, while also addressing broader environmental and sustainability goals. Ultimately, the session will demonstrate how integrating these approaches into transportation infrastructure projects can help minimize environmental impacts and build a more sustainable transportation legacy in Canada’s rapidly changing climate.
