Title | Analysis and design of steel buried bridges in high seismic zone - CHBDC vs. non-linear time history analysis |
Abstract | Steel buried bridges have been effectively utilized in a variety of applications across North America and globally. Seismic loading significantly influences the performance of large-span culverts. However, there is a lack of in-depth studies on the seismic behavior of these structures in existing literature. This research investigates the seismic performance of large-span buried bridges. The bridge system is analyzed within a high seismic zone, considering various site classifications. Both full shaking analysis and racking analysis are performed, and the results are compared. Additionally, the seismic design is evaluated according to the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA S6-2019, 2025), with a comparison made between the CHBDC's predictions and the outcomes of two the aforementioned analysis methods. The study highlights that the applicability of the CHBDC equations in high seismic zones is partially influenced by the site class for the structure considered. |
