Session Title CC - Decarbonizing the Transportation Sector
Title Underground Infrastructure―Getting to Net Zero
Abstract

In the pipe and bridge industry, we have witnessed the impacts from climate change. The increased use of road salts & acid rain, have resulted in corrosive water and soils, impacting all pipe materials. All material suppliers need to be ready to demonstrate sustainable strategies that show one’s footprint today and plans to become carbon neutral. The purpose of the presentation is to educate all audiences on the environmental impact of Corrugated Steel Products in Canada in accordance with international standards and to demonstrate their sustainability by providing environmental information on GHG’s, ozone depletion, smog air, use of renewable energy, waste disposal and end of life recycling. Over the past 25 years, the North American steel industry has significantly reduced its environmental impact—reducing energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions by more than a third. The latest Environmental Product Declaration for Corrugated Steel Pipe shows a drastic improvement over the last 5 years, making the production of steel today more sustainable than all other materials.
