Session Title CO - Utility Coordination on Projects
Title Beneath the Surface: Selecting Trenchless Solutions for Utility Installations
Abstract

The increasing demand for new utility infrastructure and the rehabilitation of aging systems in urban environments necessitates efficient and minimally disruptive construction methods and trenchless technologies offer viable alternatives to traditional open-cut excavation.

Selecting the appropriate trenchless technology for utility installation during the design phase is a critical decision that impacts project success. The selection process requires a multidisciplinary approach and involves evaluating various factors, including soil conditions, project scale, utility type, existing infrastructure, cost and stakeholder engagement.

A comprehensive geotechnical investigation is essential to understand soil properties and groundwater conditions, which influence the feasibility and performance of different trenchless methods. Additionally, the project’s scale and complexity dictate the choice of technology. Utility type and material also play a crucial role in the selection process. For example, pipe bursting is effective for replacing old, deteriorated pipelines, while HDD is preferred for installing new conduits.

Existing infrastructure, such as nearby buildings and underground utilities, must be carefully mapped and considered to avoid conflicts and ensure safe operations.
Cost analysis, including initial investment, operational costs, and long-term maintenance, is another vital aspect. Trenchless methods may have higher upfront costs but can offer significant savings in restoration and social costs. Regulatory requirements and environmental considerations, such as minimizing carbon footprint and protecting natural habitats, further influence the decision-making process.

This presentation will focus on the selection of trenchless technologies on two large scale projects and will look at how the recommended technologies were selected to relocate of public and private utilities.
