Abstract Manager

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is an asset-intensive organisation that provides a high-quality transit service to Canada’s largest urban centre and economic hub.  For a safe, reliable and integrated transit services, the TTC is maturing its Asset Management (AM) capability through ins Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) program. AM is not new to the TTC, but rather an ongoing journey. The TTC’s EAM program aims to align with international best practices to achieve the TTC’s strategic objectives including the following:

• Enhancing data collection and improving the quality of the information used for informed and risk-based decision-making;
• Leveraging state-of-the-art technology, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence;
• Supporting the adoption of achievable and affordable levels of service that mitigate risks and promote long-term safety and sustainability; and
• Supporting the life cycle and financial strategies that address needs and prioritise funding allocation based on financial capacity and capital strategies.

In 2023, the TTC and AtkinsRéalis developed a multi-year AM maturity improvement roadmap. The roadmap is divided into four (4) stages consisting of “Setting Foundations,” “Building and Embedding,” “Maturing and Developing,” and “Continuously Improving and Innovating.” The TTC’s EAM program encompassing both tangible and intangible systems including organisational structures, governance models, interconnected frameworks and associated workflows, communication channels, and performance measurement tools is at the stage of “Building and Embedding,” based on the established foundation with cross-departmental collaboration, sustainable transformation across the TTC, and identification of predictive lifecycle activities.

The TTC and AtkinsRéalis would like to share the TTC’s EAM journey and a portfolio of a series of projects in each stage to mature the TTC’s EAM program to respond to the future needs and to enhance service reliability by balancing the achievement of the require level of performance while managing risk and reducing lifecycle costs.
