Corporate Asset Management Systems (CAMS) play a crucial role in optimizing asset management across organizations. However, most CAMS focus on the operational level, tracking and maintaining assets to ensure they perform efficiently and cost-effectively. And while CAMS excel at reducing costs and improving asset performance, organizations can greatly enhance the effectiveness of their asset management with a way of simulating and comparing investment scenarios.  

Investing less, investing more, synchronizing maintenance programs, prioritizing critical segments over others, these are the types of decisions that can have a significant impact on asset performance, financial health, risk tolerance, and the overall strategic success of an organization. Operation-focused CAMS cannot effectively test the long-term impacts of these decisions to confirm if they offer cost-saving, risk reduction, or performance boosting benefits.  

To bridge this gap, Asset Investment Planning (AIP) solutions provide a critical complement to CAMS by providing advanced simulation and analysis capabilities. AIP solutions enable organizations to evaluate the long-term impact of investment decisions across their asset portfolios, considering a variety of factors such as asset behavior, organizational decision-making processes, risk tolerance, financial constraints, and regulatory requirements. These solutions simulate entire investment scenarios offering a clear view of the trade-offs between different service targets, investment levels, and funding requirements. This holistic approach ensures organizations have a comprehensive understanding of how asset decisions impact both the operational and financial health of the organization. 

Building on the case study shared at last year’s TAC conference in Vancouver, this presentation will showcase how AIP solutions can elevate traditional CAMS to facilitate cross-asset optimization and long-term capital planning. By examining the real-world example of the collaboration between Direxyon and the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité Durable, attendees will gain insight into how AIP solutions help: 

• Inform cross-asset comparisons to identify the most efficient allocation of resources 

• Minimize disruptions to the population, particularly in high-traffic areas or locations with limited detour options 

• Improve the use of internal experts’ capacity by optimizing involvement in specialized projects 

• Guide decision-making to ensure operational practices align and serve long-term strategic KPIs 

This session will highlight how integrating AIP solutions with CAMS unlock the full potential of asset portfolios, enabling organizations to optimize performance, reduce costs, and make informed decisions that benefit their communities for decades to come.
