Session Title GD - Urban Design Challenges: Accessibility, Vision Zero and Complete Streets
Title City of Edmonton: Complete Streets Design and Construction Standards
Abstract

The Complete Streets Design and Construction Standards (CSDCS) document provides a single point of reference that supports the planning, design, and construction of Complete Streets in Edmonton. It integrates the best practices in Complete Streets design philosophy and guidance introduced in the City’s 2013 Complete Streets Guidelines with the City of Edmonton’s former Roadway Design Standards and Construction Specifications.

The intent of these Complete Streets Design and Construction Standards is to encourage a holistic approach to street design that will develop a network of streets that are safe, attractive, comfortable, and welcoming to all users in all seasons, while considering operational and maintenance challenges.

The Complete Streets Design and Construction Standards are a living document, with regular updates to incorporate changes in best practice and their application in the Edmonton context. The City is completing a major update aimed for publishing in 2025 with a focus on providing direction on how to plan and design communities to ensure that all of the elements needed to achieve the City’s goals of Vision Zero, Accessibility, increased active transportation, and other design elements can be achieved.  The updated standards will also help support the City of Edmonton’s City Plan vision of having 50% of trips made by transit and active transportation.

The presentation will discuss the challenges faced by the project team to develop new standards, the engagement approach, and present some of the changes that were moved forward that will help meet the City's policy objectives.
