Session Title CO - Utility Coordination on Projects
Title Utility Relocations on the Pattullo Bridge Project: New Westminster and Surrey, BC
Abstract

The Pattullo Bridge Project in Surrey and New Westminster, BC required a variety of utility relocations at both ends of the bridge.

The new bridge features a cable-stayed design, towers 166.5m high, spans 1,233 meters long, and has two in-river piers reduced from the current six. The new traffic lanes at both ends encroached on water, sanitary, and storm assets owned by the City of Surrey, City of New Westminster, the Ministry of Transportation Infrastructure (MoTI and now MOTT), and Metro Vancouver.

Relocation was started in 2023 and substantially completed by early 2025.

City of New Westminster:

  • Relocation of 1200 mm dia. sanitary trunk
  • Relocation of combined sewer
  • Relocation of watermains
  • Relocation/separation of storm water systems from combo sewer system
  • New storm outfall

City of Surrey:

  • Relocation of sanitary forcemains
  • Relocation of watermains and hydrants
  • Relocation of storm water system

The presentation will focus on each relocation in order, along with revised design standards and lessons learned.
