Title | Building Sustainable Cities: Lessons from Edmonton's LID Approach |
Abstract or description | Urbanization trends have reshaped our world, leading to challenges centered on vehicular dependency and the proliferation of impervious surfaces. By shifting our approaches to embrace Low Impact Development (LID) for point source drainage and prioritizing active transportation planning, we unlock the opportunity to harmonize urban mobility with climate resilience, enhancing urban livability. Drawing on ISL's collaboration with EPCOR in Edmonton, Alberta, we explore the integration of LID features in the redesign and construction of major streetscapes such as Jasper Avenue, 124 Street, 105 Avenue, and the Quarters, as well as in residential areas across the city. Our presentation aims to share comprehensive insights into the design standards, construction methods, and evolving guidelines that have shaped Edmonton's approach to creating sustainable, resilient urban spaces in a challenging cold weather climate. |
Presentation Description (for Conference App) | Participants will gain valuable insights into the practicalities of integrating LID in urban projects, the importance of adaptive and resilient design strategies, and the potential for green stormwater infrastructure to significantly contribute to the sustainability and livability of urban environments, particularly in the face of changing climate conditions. |
