Session Title EN - Design and Delivery of Wildlife and Ecological Connectivity Infrastructure Across Canada
Title Wildlife Collision Mitigation Measures for the Highway 401 Expansion from Mississauga to Milton
Abstract or description

The Highway 401 Expansion Project (the Project) involved the widening and reconstruction of approximately 18 km of Highway 401, from east of the Credit River in Mississauga to west of Regional Road 25 in Milton. The project was designed and built under a very aggressive schedule, with the project awarded in April 2019 and the completion of the expansion was in late 2022.

The project is within the Sixteen Mile Creek and Credit River Watersheds with a mix of commercial, agricultural, industrial, and residential land use in the corridor, with some forested patches. Select areas were known to be more conducive to wildlife movement due to the forests, watercourses, and natural areas on both sides of the highway. Wildlife mitigation features including wildlife passages, wildlife fencing for large and small mammals and wildlife escape ramps were constructed.

This presentation will review how these wildlife mitigation features were designed and constructed, in consideration of the more urbanized corridor and other civil, structural, drainage, and staging requirements for the expansion. Adaptive measures and lessons learned will be discussed for each of the wildlife mitigation features.

Presentation Description (for Conference App) This presentation will review and discuss the wildlife mitigation features on the Highway 401 Expansion Project, including wildlife passages, wildlife fence, and wildlife escape ramps. This presentation will review how the design for these wildlife mitigation features were developed and constructed as well as adaptive measures and lessons learned.
