Title | Moving to Fully Digital Solutions for Utility Coordination |
Abstract or description | The need for effective and efficient utility coordination for municipalities has become a critical element in delivering major projects on time and within budget. Today’s world of major transit projects, multi-jurisdictional agencies, and diverse road users puts pressure on both the utility agencies and municipalities to effectively design and construct infrastructure to minimize disruption to City’s and future relocation. In addition to this, the telecommunication industry has exploded in growth and expansion, with funding opportunities grants at the Federal and Provincial level to increase broadband and connectivity. Enhancements to existing wired and wireless technology have become a major requirement to moving City’s to a digital environment to support and thrive with future technology. In recent years, the City of Hamilton has experienced significant growth, including high density expansions within the downtown area. This type of growth generates a tremendous amount of enhancement and permitting to public utilities to bring projects to life. The City of Hamilton has recently overhauled it’s permitting systems to move to fully digital environments to streamline efficiency. The City has also been delivering an accelerated City-wide broadband deployment, and has undertaken major process and technology enhancements to improve the efficiency and delivery. This presentation will provide a well-rounded understanding of requirements to develop a scalable model for municipal permitting of 3rd party utilities. We will examine a detailed view from municipal side of delivering an accelerated broadband project, including elements required for municipal permitting, regulatory, and resourcing. Also include a review of customized processes and technology to scale permit approvals and construction oversight. |
