Title | Traffic Signal Design for Interconnected Signals at Cedarvale Station: Balancing the Needs of Pedestrians, Cyclists |
Abstract or description | The Traffic Signal design at the intersection of Eglinton Road and Allen Road expressway near Cedarvale Station in Toronto presents unique challenges requiring a multifaceted approach to cater to pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, and Light Rail Transit (LRT) station access. This presentation outlines the design and implementation strategies for two hardwire interconnected traffic signals, emphasizing the integration and prioritization of diverse transportation modes in a highly congested urban environment. We delve into the complexities of designing traffic signals that not only manage vehicular flow efficiently but also ensure the safety and convenience of pedestrians and cyclists, particularly considering the proximity to the LRT station. Key considerations include the integration of advanced pedestrian crossing systems, cyclist-friendly signal phases, and signal control technology for vehicular traffic. The presentation also discusses the challenges faced in maintaining traffic flow efficiency while ensuring safety, the impact of these designs on reducing congestion, and their role in promoting a more sustainable urban transit ecosystem. Furthermore, we explore the use of simulation models and real-time data analytics in optimizing signal timings and phasing, taking into account the peak-hour traffic variations and the specific demands of each mode of transportation. The outcomes highlight the effectiveness of our approach in improving traffic flow, reducing delays, and enhancing safety for all road users, thereby setting a precedent for future traffic signal design projects in similar urban settings. |
