Title | Humboldt Plaza: Imagined through intersection realignment |
Abstract or description |
The reimagined Humbolt Plaza also provides dedicated areas for relaxation, recreational activities such as ping pong, and communal gatherings. Looking ahead, ongoing redevelopment adjacent to Humbolt Plaza has provided additional public amenities through the comprehensive reconstruction of the entire frontage into a cohesive plaza space, further contributing to the multifaceted and vibrant character of Humboldt Plaza.
The emergence of Humboldt Plaza can be traced back to the reconfiguration of the Douglas St/Humboldt St/Burdett intersection, originally a non-standard 5-way intersection. The challenges associated with the non-standard alignment included limited visibility for turning movements, and a lengthy signal cycle. In addition the major arterial road being a priority route for transit with key objectives to reduce delays.
This transformation converted the space into a more conventional 4-way intersection, with one leg entirely closed to vehicular traffic. This closure provided an opportunity for a public plaza and the intersection was strategically designed to maintain permeability for pedestrians, bicycles, and even horse-drawn carriages.
The modification of the 5-way intersection was initiated through a project to introduce a 2-way bike AAA facility along the Wharf St corridor. The outcomes of the larger Wharf St renewal project, particularly the active transportation enhancements made along Wharf Street, the closure at Humbolt Plaza, and the innovative pedestrian 'scramble' intersection at Government Street, have provided notable improvements to mobility, accessibility, and road safety for all road users.
The reimagined Humbolt Plaza also provides dedicated areas for relaxation, recreational activities such as ping pong, and communal gatherings. Looking ahead, ongoing redevelopment adjacent to Humbolt Plaza has provided the opportunity for additional public amenities through the comprehensive reconstruction of the entire frontage into a cohesive plaza space, further redefining roadway space in the urban environment.
