Title | Strategic Investment Fund ITS Pilot Projects in BC |
Abstract or description | In April 2023, the BC government selected four ITS pilot projects to be funded by the Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) for up to $1.8 Million. The Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) Intelligent Transportation Pilots are project managed and funded by TELUS in partnership with BC Ministry of Citizen Services, BC Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure, Miovision and KPMG.
The purpose of the selected pilots was to demonstrate solutions to improve response to transportation congestion, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase safety, reduce injuries/collisions, and improve traffic flow through innovative new intelligent transportation technologies. The BC Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure and BC Ministry of Citizen Services initially identified 10 pilot projects and eventually narrowed them down to four. The four pilots selected are:
In July 2023, the project planning was initiated, and the SIF team started stakeholder engagement and developing the governance structure. The first project was installed in the field in August 2023 with all four projects installed by October 2023. Each of the pilot projects uses video analytics and machine learning to collect data and analyze near misses. The Hwy 97 pilot project also uses video analytics with adaptive signal control for performance management and to measure and reduce GHGs. At this time, data collection, review and aggregation are continuing, however, preliminary pilot project results will be available by the TAC conference in September 2024. |
