Session Title CC - Driving to Net Zero: What Are Organizations Doing to Achieve Their Goal?
Title Making Zero Progress in the Transportation sector: The AIL Group of Companies journey
Abstract or description

The AIL Group of Companies fabricates, supplies and designs transportation infrastructure solutions, and plays a role in the transportation sector’s net zero journey.  The AIL Group of Companies has committed to be net zero by 2050 and started accounting its journey in 2020.

From 2020 to 2022, the AIL Group of Companies reduced its Scope 1 and 2 carbon fiscal intensity (Tonnes CO2e/$ Revenue) from 13 t/$M to 9 t/$M, and at two of its larger facilities, increased its total percentage of energy from renewable sources from 6% to 25%.  Additionally, the AIL Group of Companies has invested in reducing Scope 3 emission.  An understanding of life cycle emissions of short and medium span bridge projects has been learned through ISO compliant environmental product declarations and life cycle assessment comparisons.  These studies will help agencies better understand carbon impacts of bridge projects, empowering agencies to advance their net zero journeys.  The AIL Group of Companies is also working with its supply chain and logistics partners to advance net zero progress.

The AIL Group of Companies net zero progress is helping the transportation sector’s net zero journey, and these stories will provide examples to agencies of how they can advance their net zero journey.  This paper summarizes the AIL Group of Companies net zero journey to date, highlighting key challenges, decisions, successes and next steps such as the:

  1. Net Zero commitment: what this means, and why it matters.
  2. Approach to Net Zero progress for Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, including success stories and lessons learned.
  3. Efforts to improve agencies net zero progress.  Examples comparing the life cycle carbon footprint of two common and functionally equivalent short to medium span bridge crossings structures are provided.  Each bridge was designed in accordance to the 2019 Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) and maintained according to common practice.
  4. Efforts to improve logistics and supply chain impacts.
  5. Recommendations for advancing Net Zero progress across the transportation sector.

Keywords: Net Zero, carbon, life cycle assessment, climate change mitigation, greenhouse gas, buried structures, emissions, carbon footprint.

Presentation Description (for Conference App) The AIL Group of Companies has committed to net zero by 2050 and started accounting its journey in 2020. This paper summarizes the net zero journey to date, highlighting key challenges, decisions, successes and next steps. Examples of Scope 1, 2 and 3 reductions are provided, including a life cycle carbon comparison between two functionally equivalent bridges.
