The Envision Framework from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure provides a tool to quantify the sustainability performance of an infrastructure project, recommends industry best practices, and identifies opportunities to improve the sustainability performance of the project. Major highways, bridges, airports, transit, railways, ports, and other transportation infrastructure have used Envision to integrate sustainability and resiliency considerations into the planning, design, and construction of infrastructure across North America. Envision is intended to challenge designers to consider possible alternatives that will improve asset performance and provide economic, social, and environmental benefits to infrastructure owners and the communities that they serve. Over CAD $300 Billion in infrastructure (construction value) has applied the Envision Framework, with over CAD $110 Billion in transportation infrastructure (construction value) completing the verification process to achieve an Envision Award.

Projects that use the Envision Framework can seek to have their project certified by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure through independent verification. Depending on the performance of the project, it is possible to obtain an Envision Award at four levels (Verified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum). More transportation projects than ever are setting a goal to achieve an Envision Award, but knowing where to start on a complex infrastructure project is often not clear.

In this session, Brad Moore will focus on how to implement the Envision Framework during design, procurement, construction, and operation, in order to effectively improve the sustainability of any transportation project. Brad currently leads Stantec’s Sustainable Infrastructure Team focused on integrating Envision into project delivery. He will share strategies and lessons learned on what to consider at each major stage of a transportation project in order to improve the sustainability of the project and achieve Envision compliance. The session will include details on how to determine if a project should pursue Envision Verification, how to set the project’s Envision Strategy for Verification, considerations for integrating sustainability initiatives into procurement documentation, and lessons learned on developing a practical construction program that seeks to minimize impacts.
