Title Speed Limit Policy Implementation as a Road Safety Tools
Abstract

The City of Vaughan has adopted a speed limit policy to ensure safety for all road users.  The Policy includes guidelines to ensure a consistent approach in setting speed limits throughout the City's road network that consider growth, urbanization, and the specific roadway environment and characteristics.  The City has implemented a speed limit reduction in the following area: (1) 40km/h in school zone and park areas; (2) 30km/h in public laneway; and (3) selected 40km/h Area Neighbourhood.  Part of the speed limit policy implementation include a comprehensive communication plan and working in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.  To increase driver awareness when entering the the new speed zone for the 40km/h Area Neighbourhood, entry points  to each community has been signed and accompanied by roadway stenciled pavement markings illustrating the regulatory speed limt.  This presentation include information on the speed limit policy around speed limits to establish speed zones, the implementation, communication plan, stakeholder engagements, the evaluation, and lessons learned.
