Title | Town of Innisfil Traffic Calming Innovation |
Abstract | Town of Innisfil Traffic Calming Innovation The Town of Innisfil has prided it itself on being a forward-looking community built on innovation. It has established itself as a community with inspirational land use planning and development, so it was no surprise that when they went searching for a consultant team to help update their traffic calming policy, they wanted an innovative approach. With their policy and program revitalized they have found a way to be creative and innovative with delivery. Instead of having a program that is merely reactive to community complaints, the Town approaches road safety through traffic calming in a proactive manner. Given the quantity of data at the Town’s disposal and the ability to explore Big Data there was an opportunity to get ahead of the game and know where speeding issues are before complaints came in. A GIS based application developed by EXP to do just that has allowed the Town to recognize problem areas and resolve them in an efficient, less tedious manner, allowing their streets to be safer and the Town to be more responsive to the needs of their constituents. This presentation takes the viewer through the process of establishing this innovation; the potential use of big data, existing data, and GIS platforms; and a desire to break from the status quo. The final result is an efficient application and an improved policy framework which has had an immediate impact on the Town and which has even greater potential in the future. |
