Title Utilizing Federal Programs, Climate Data and Best Practices to Build Resilience in the Transportation Sector
Abstract

This conference presentation will feature co-presenters from the Canadian Centre for Climate Services and Transport Canada. The presentation will begin by discussing the gaps and barriers to building resilience to climate change and extreme weather events in the transportation sector, such as integrating climate change considerations into asset management practices. We will discuss the types of resources, training and climate data that are needed for transportation professionals to increase adaptive capacity and address these challenges. For example, we will discuss best practices for completing a climate risk assessment, mainstreaming climate change considerations, and developing and implementing an adaptation measures. Additionally, the presenters will highlight new datasets on ClimateData.ca that can be utilized by the transportation sector, including climate-shifted IDF curves, weather files, and CMIP6 projections. They will also discuss the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC) Design Value Explorer, which is relevant to the bridge and highway code books. The focus of this presentation is to provide an overview of how to access and use relevant climate data, as well as gather input from transportation industry professionals on their perspectives and necessary steps for effectively addressing climate change in their field.
