Session Title ST - Transportation Structures
Title Beechwood Road Underpass - Emergency Evaluation and Repair of Precast Girder following Over-Height Impact
Abstract

In January 2021, the Highway 401 Beechwood Road Underpass near Napanee (Ontario) was struck by the extended forks of a forklift being transported on a flatbed truck. The resulting damage included spalling and crushing of up to 2/3 of the exterior prestressed concrete girder cross-section over approximately 8 m of the girder length, exposing the undamaged prestressing tendons and damaged rebar at various sections of the girder.

MP performed a GPR survey of the damaged area and a structural evaluation to determine the remaining structural integrity for the damaged condition. Various plate and grillage analyses were completed, and a rehabilitation of the girder was recommended.

This paper presents the findings of the inspection, structural evaluation, recommended rehabilitation and repair details including recommended proprietary materials and method of construction. The paper will also present construction issues related to the recommended repairs.
