Session Title	AM - Emerging Asset Management Classes and Maturity
Title	Emerging Road Safety Asset Management Practices on Yukon Highways
Abstract	The Yukon typically has the highest rate of road fatalities in Canada each year. Several transportation asset classes contribute to road safety, including roadside vegetation management, roadside barrier, road signs, line painting, and safety rest areas. Asset management programs have been in place for these asset classes since 2018. Each is in various states of maturity; some have had Asset Management Plans in place for years and are inspected for condition on a regular basis while others are just having Asset Management Plans developed this year. This presentation will explore how these emerging asset classes are approaching maturity and what steady state operations may look like, as well as addressing challenges posed by the unique situation of rural Yukon highways. A short construction season, sharply increasing costs, limited contractor availability, and aging equipment add to the difficulty of properly applying asset management principles. Ideally, developing asset management systems for each of these assets will contribute to greater safety for motorists in the Yukon.
