Title | At- Grade LRT Crossings Safety Improvement Rehabilitation |
Abstract | The infrastructure of the at-grade LRT NE crossings were nearing the end of their respective service life. As such, an assessment of the safety, functionality, and condition of the crossings was warranted. In 2016, a conceptual study was completed on the safety improvement of seven at grade crossing on Edmonton LRT Capital Line in the NE side of the city. Based on the recommendations, improvements at two crossing locations were implemented as part of this project. The detailed design of two of these crossings was completed in 2019 and moved to construction with the Construction Management (CM) delivery model. The other locations were prioritized and a plan was developed to improve all of the crossings. CM brought out an innovative Plug and Play approach for procurement and commissioning of these two crossings which convinced the City of Edmonton to move forward with the other crossings as well. This project modified crossings and associated infrastructure to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety. The scope of the project included improvements of LRT crossing warning systems (lights, gates, bells), ambient lighting, communication systems and physical channelization for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians will be designed and implemented. But depending on the location, security and overhead catenary system (OCS) components also improved. The innovative techniques and progress of work helped the City to add two more crossings to the list after engaging with the other departments. This article will focus on project development and delivery from the strategy to handover to the operation, challenges and lessons learned from the whole proce |
