Session Title IT - Innovations in ITS
Title Rail Crossing Advanced Traveller Information System
Abstract

The Roberts Bank Rail Corridor is a critical rail link that connects ports and facilities in Greater Vancouver to the North American rail network. The rail line intersects four major roadways, blocking these vehicle crossings for extended periods of time and causing significant delays for motorists when trains pass through. To address the problem, the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure initiated the Rail Crossing Information System (RCIS) project. This presentation showcases the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) designed and implemented by PBX that accurately determines when and for how long each crossing will be blocked. Up-to-the-minute notifications are displayed on message signs in advance, enabling motorists to decide to take alternate routes and, as a result, reduce traffic congestion and its associated environmental, economic, and social costs. The presentation also explores the different technologies considered for the project and the rigorous performance testing undertaken to deliver the project on time and on budget.
