Session Title GD - Cycling Network Geometric Design Leaders
Title Innovative Traffic Signal Design for Cyclist Safety
Abstract

As municipalities upgrade their roadways with cycle tracks and multi-user pathways, the resulting new roadway geometry lends to an increase in intersection conflicts. How do we design bike facilities for all ages and abilities? Can we optimize for safety while reducing conflicts and delay? This session reveals best practices for emerging standards and lessons learned on traffic signal and lighting design for cyclist facilities. It examines lighting design, signal infrastructure design, and signal timings of bicycle facilities, focusing on intersections.  Some of the topics covered will include bicycle actuation, minimum green, clearance times, and bike-only phases. It will cover cost effective lighting design and when and how to design bicycle signals. Case studies will be presented with the innovative solutions explained. Learn from the many lessons gained from implementing these types of projects and the additional value we can bring to the users of these facilities.
