| Abstract Title | Curriculum as Collaboration: Engaging Community Wisdom Into Community and Global Health Teaching in Ugme |
| Will the presenter be a: | Faculty |
| Methods | Curriculum development began four years prior to the school's launch. Initial engagement with community members through surveys and in-person sessions established the TMU SoM's foundational 5 Pillars and 7 Values. Guided by these principles and aligned with competencies from the Medical Council of Canada and CanMEDS roles (notably Advocate and Communicator), the course framework was developed. An iterative process of re-engagement ensured community knowledge was incorporated into learning objectives, course themes, cases, and a cornerstone Community Advocacy Project (CAP). A "glocal" (global issues with local impacts) framework was also co-emphasized to reflect the region's diverse and migratory populations. |
| Results | The resulting CGH course is being implemented in September 2025 with the inaugural UGME cohort. The pedagogy combines large-group active learning delivered by both faculty and community with the experiential CAP experience. The course integrates principles of health promotion, disease prevention, knowledge translation, and determinants of health. |
| Discussion | This course represents an innovative model of curriculum development rooted in genuine community engagement and project-based experiential learning. Moving beyond traditional didactic teaching, this approach can serve as a framework for other medical schools seeking to fulfill a social accountability mandate. |
