| Abstract Title | Re-Envisioning Primary Care: an Environmental Scan of Community Primary Care Clinics to Support the Development of A New Medical School |
| Will the presenter be a: | Faculty |
| Methods | We conducted a multiphase environmental scan of community primary care clinics within 100 km of TMU which included: identifying potential teaching settings through an online search, assessing site readiness by interviewing physicians during site visits, and seeking feedback on the results from learners, faculty, and staff regarding the availability of teaching resources. Narrative data underwent thematic analysis. |
| Results | Fifty clinics were assessed. Of these, 46 (92%) expressed willingness to accept family medicine residents. Thematic analysis identified key challenges: limited emphasis on continuity of care, poor integration of teaching between the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and Royal College specialties, and inadequate resources to support teaching (e.g., space, time, faculty development). |
| Discussion | Targeted interventions addressing the identified gaps will be needed to increase the number of primary care teaching clinics. Faculty development and ongoing support may mitigate resistance to teaching, while cross-specialty collaboration could reduce siloing. Phased implementation and additional resources would help overcome structural limitations. This work provides a foundation for building sustainable, community-based training sites to meet Ontario's pressing primary care needs. |
